Wynton Learson Marsalis is a virtuoso jazz trumpeter who started playing trumpet at the age of six and who was recognized as an important soloist in both the classical and jazz traditions at an early age. His impact and influence as a jazz educator has added to his international stature as a bandleader, performer, and composer. In 1997, his epic oratorio on slavery, Blood on the Fields, was the first jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize. Marsalis was born in New Orleans.
