Dizzy Gilespie

John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie, one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of the 20th century and a prime architect of the bebop movement, was born in Cheraw, South Carolina. Nicknamed "Dizzy" for his zany onstage antics, he set a new standard for trumpet players with his jolting rhythmic technique and harmonic explorations, heralding the transition from swing to bebop. Gillespie wrote some of the best-known jazz tunes of his era, including A Night in Tunisia and Manteca.
