Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald, "The First Lady of Song," was the most popular female jazz singer in America for more than half a century. Born in Newport News, Virginia, she won 14 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums in her lifetime. In the 1950s, Fitzgerald became the first African American to perform at the Mocambo nightclub after her friend, Marilyn Monroe, lobbied the owner for the booking. Ella in Berlin is still one of her best-selling albums.
