Coleman Hawkins

Known as the "Father of the Tenor Sax," Coleman Randolph Hawkins (known as Bean or the Hawk) is generally associated with swing music and the Big Band Era, although he was one of the few hot jazz musicians who successfully made the shift to bebop. In 1934, he moved to England for five years, where he contributed to the creation of the jazz scene in Europe. His recording of Body and Soul in 1940 made him an international star. Hawkins was born in St. Joseph, Missouri.
