Trumpeter, bandleader, and composer, Miles Davis was a giant in the history of jazz, an international star with unprecedented crossover appeal. His career spanned the history of jazz from the mid-1940s to the early 1990s; he was at the forefront of nearly every important musical innovation during that period. Born in Alton, Illinois, Davis was a child prodigy who started playing the trumpet at the age of 13. His album, Kind of Blue, is the best-selling jazz record of all time.
