John William "Trane" Coltrane was an influential tenor saxophonist and one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. Born into deep poverty in Hamlet, North Carolina, his family was involved in music and the ministry. From 1955 to 1956, he was a key player in the seminal Miles Davis Quintet and was featured on albums such as Round About Midnight and Cookin', emerging as a leader and composer in his own right. Coltrane's best known recordings include My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme.
