A powerhouse harmonica master of Chicago’s golden blues era, James “Mr. Superharp” Cotton was a young protégé of Sonny Boy Williamson II and played with the Muddy Waters Band for 12 years before embarking on a celebrated solo career. Known for his animated showmanship, Cotton recorded almost 30 solo albums, including Mighty Long Time, the famed Harp Attack! with Junior Wells, Carey Bell, and Billy Branch, and the Grammy-winning Deep In the Blues. The Smithsonian Institution honored Cotton by adding one of his harmonicas to their permanent collection.
