Skip James

(1902-1969)
Skip James

Possessing an unusual vocal style that often soared into a chilling falsetto, the legacy of country blues guitarist, pianist, and songwriter Skip James is based almost entirely on a handful of definitive recordings from the early 1930’s that include “Hard Times Killin’ Floor Blues” and “I’m So Glad.”  Virtually unheard of until his rediscovery during the 1960’s blues revival, James—born Nehemiah Curtis in Bentonia, Mississippi—performed at the 1964 Newport Jazz Festival and went on to release the rare Greatest Of The Delta Blues Singers and the classic Today!
