A West Tennessee sharecropper’s daughter who arrived in Chicago with “35 cents and a box of Ritz Crackers,” Koko Taylor was a revered singer known as “Queen of the Blues.” Born Cora Walton and nicknamed Koko for her love of chocolate, she achieved worldwide acclaim with the 1965 hit, “Wang Dang Doodle" (written by Willie Dixon), and tunes like “I Got What It Takes.” A tireless performer, the award-winning Taylor received a Grammy for her 1984 Blues Explosion, appeared on television numerous times, and influenced later performers like Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin.
