Back One Mars Beat Artist - Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins

( 1930 - Present )

From the time that Sonny Rollins began recording at the age of 19, his fluid, resonant approach to the tenor saxophone has been endlessly copied and his original compositions frequently adapted. Born and raised in Harlem, Rollins wrote the score for the Academy Award-winning movie Alfie (1966) and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. A number of his compositions, including St. Thomas, Oleo, Doxy, and Airegin, have become jazz standards.
